Part One
3D Printing Workshop Description
This is a full level one workshop for those that are unfamiliar with but want to learn more about 3D printing, 3D printers and how they work. It covers the basics principles of the technology and the industries that it is being used in. We will also discuss ways that artists are using 3D printing for their creative projects and look at examples of methods to incorporate it within other artistic disciplines.
We will cover:
• Basic techniques for getting started with 3D modeling
• How to import 3D models into 3D slicing software and generate gcode
• How to transfer 3D gcode files to the 3D printer
• The key mechanics of our Tinkerine DittoPro 3D printer works
• Includes a small booklet of 3D printing instructions and resources
This workshop is a requirement for those that have never used a 3D printer before in order to be able to access our more advanced, upcoming 3D printing workshops.
***Suggested Requirements: Please bring your own laptop computer if possible (not necessary though.)
Part Two
Brother SE-425 Digital Embroidery and Sewing Machine
This is a level one workshop for those that are unfamiliar with but want to learn more about digital design and digital embroidery and sewing. It covers the basics principles of the machine and ways to make embroidery patches from your digital designs.
We will cover:
• The digital interface of the sewing machine
• How to thread the machine properly and make bobbins
• The best materials needed for embroidery patch making
• How to download and/or set up your digital files in a design program
• How to convert your file to a format that the Brother Machine will be able to work with
• Making a patch and then finishing it off!
• Includes a small booklet of sewing and embroidery instructions and resources
Part Three
3 hours of open studio time where you’ll be able to use the machines and ask questions
(Workshop includes materials, refreshments and snacks)
Instructor: Candie Tanaka
Candie Tanaka (@candietanaka and candietanaka.com) is a Writer and Artist with experience in startup culture, 3D printing, makerspaces and various forms of technology. Candie has a BFA in Intermedia and studied Sculpture with Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. They also have a certificate in New Media Design and Web Development from BCIT and recently completed the Writer’s Studio Program at SFU.
Advantages to taking a workshop with ICOAAT, include small class size, downtown location and hands on instruction.
